The Basics of High School Wrestling

Wrestling is a competition between two individuals, the object is to control the opponent to the ground or off their feet and score points for different types of control holds, the other objective is to use a control hold to "pin' the opponent to the mat. The match lasts approximately 6 minutes which consists of 3 possible periods of 2 minutes. The match can end earlier if an opponent is pinned, disqualified, or meets technical fall point criteria. Wrestlers are divided by their respective weights classes in order to maintain safety and fairness. The sport of wrestling is not only an individual sport but also a team sport in which the individual can score team points for each type of win, whether by points or pin.

Wrestling includes two main formats of competition. Tournament: which is typically  groups of 12,16,24,32 person brackets (similar to that of "March Madness") by weight class. Dual meet: which is a team of up to 14 versus another team of up to 14 separated by weight class. The state championships is an individual tournament format that includes a team scoring format as well and is dependent on individual qualification from a CIF sectional tournament (LA CIF Championships).

Wrestling high school season is from November to February and is considered a "Winter Sport." Participants are encouraged to participate in sports "year round" and have the option to train/condition through out the year. Van Nuys also offers a wrestling club known as "Los Lobos Wrestling." "Los Lobos" is an offseason option open to all students and is not an official group of Van Nuys HS athletics.

Van Nuys HS competes in the Valley Mission League which includes:
Canoga Park HS, Panorama HS, Monroe HS, San Fernando HS, and Sylmar HS.
(Reseda HS and Kennedy HS do not sponsor wrestling)

Van Nuys HS is a member of the CIF Los Angeles City Section. Wrestling is separated by "gender" similar to any other sport offered in high school. Each gender has its own weight class system.
