Spanish 3 Modern Latin America Section
Course Description
Spanish IV: Modern Latin America is an advanced Spanish course designed for students with high-intermediate proficiency who are ready to deepen their language skills while exploring the complex cultural, political, and artistic landscapes of contemporary Latin America. This course is taught entirely in Spanish and focuses on critical thinking, real-world application, and cultural connection.
Students engage with authentic materials—including music, film, visual art, poetry, podcasts, and news media—from across Latin America. Through discussion, analysis, and performance-based projects, students explore key topics such as social movements, indigenous resistance, Afro-Latinidad, migration, identity, and contemporary art and music.
As part of the Performing Arts Magnet, this course incorporates creative expression such as script writing, spoken word, multimedia presentations, short film creation, and performance pieces that allow students to connect personally and artistically with the material.
By the end of the course, students will demonstrate strong interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational skills in Spanish, and gain a richer understanding of Latin American culture in the 21st century. The course follows the California World Language Standards and supports academic and artistic excellence through LAUSD’s EGI (Equity, Grading & Instruction) framework.
