Spanish 1
Course Description
Spanish 1 is an introductory course designed for students with little or no prior experience in Spanish. In this class, the primary focus is on speaking and real-world communication rather than memorizing grammar rules. Students build foundational skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in Spanish, with the goal of using the language in meaningful, practical ways from day one.
As part of the Performing Arts Magnet, this course includes performance-based activities such as skits, storytelling, improvisation, and multimedia projects that allow students to express themselves creatively while using the target language. Cultural topics from across the Spanish-speaking world are integrated into every unit, helping students make global connections and deepen their cultural awareness.
By the end of Spanish 1, students will be able to carry out basic conversations, describe daily life, express likes and preferences, and understand simple written and spoken Spanish—all while building confidence as language learners. The course follows the CA World Language Standards and supports all learners through LAUSD’s Equity, Grading & Instruction (EGI) framework.
